For Lyann Jerono, stepping into motherhood as a teenager came with more than just responsibility—it came with fear, uncertainty, and the abrupt end of a dream. Fresh out of high school, she found herself thrust into a parental role she hadn’t planned for. Without an income and with a baby to care for, life felt stagnant.

“College wasn’t even on my mind," she admits. “I had four siblings depending on my mum, and I knew we couldn’t afford it."

Lyann’s turning point came through a family connection. Her aunt, a self-employed artisan atJua Kali, encouraged her to attend a local community forum hosted by the Good Kenyan Foundation at the Chief’s Hall. Curious but unsure, Lyann went just to learn more – but what she found that day planted the seed of a new beginning.

Joining Good Kenyan was the opportunity she hadn’t dared to hope for. The program offered far more than she expected. She developed skills in entrepreneurship, computer literacy, art and design, and—through her favorite part of the program—life skills classes.

“I learned how to manage money, balance my priorities using the wheel of life, and most importantly, I gained self-efficacy—the belief that I am capable."

The cohort model also gave her something she hadn’t experienced in a while—community. The support, shared experiences, and interactive learning environment became a space where Lyann could grow without judgment.

Since graduating from the program, Lyann’s life has taken a new trajectory. She was awarded a scholarship through Good Kenyan and is now in her second year of college, pursuing a Diploma in Teacher Education.

“The computer and life skills I gained have been incredibly helpful in my college journey," she says. “Good Kenyan opened a door I thought was shut forever."

Now focused on building a future as an educator, Lyann is also committed to encouraging others to embrace opportunities when they come:

“To any young person out there, especially those who feel stuck – Good Kenyan is more than a program. It’s a space that uplifts you with knowledge, skills, the right mindset, and even access to education and job opportunities. Good Kenyan is the best place to be. It’s home."

Lyann’s journey is proof that even the most unexpected detours can lead to powerful destinations – when the right support and belief are in place.
