Humphrey Kayange and Lucy Chepchumba

Organization History

Good Kenyan Foundation was founded by Lucy Chepchumba, who experienced a profound personal loss when her mother passed away during her high school years. This event left her needing guidance during the critical transition from high school to college. As she navigated this challenging period, Lucy became determined to support others facing similar circumstances. Inspired by her grandmother’s commitment to community service, she felt a calling to make a broader impact.

In 2017, rugby Olympian Humphrey Kayange was contemplating retirement from rugby. During a conversation with Lucy, he shared his passion for mentoring emerging rugby players. He expressed his desire to do more to support those lacking income and education opportunities. While recognizing their shared vision for empowering youth, Lucy invited Humphrey to the Good Kenyan Foundation to amplify their impact.

With the support of close friends and family, Lucy and Humphrey launched the organization in 2017, initially funding it themselves. What began with just one staff member and two part-time volunteers has grown to include four full-time employees and seven part-time facilitators. They collaborated with experts to develop a customized curriculum aligned with their mission and drafted the organization’s initial concept. Although the Good Kenyan Foundation started as a social enterprise, it was formally incorporated as a non-profit in 2019.

Since its inception, the Good Kenyan Foundation has served over 600 youth and indirectly impacted many more. The organization has expanded its reach significantly, from serving ten youth per cohort twice a year to now operating three cohorts in two locations, each serving 35 youth.
